I wonder how much of that is also that laws and criteria have changed as well. I feel like every time I hit a bureaucratic obstacle I could just see the government person who'd been behind it going "That'll keep the fakers from taking advantage!!" with no insight into what it's like in real life.
When I read about other people's stories I'm also amazed I got approved after only three tries. Which on the one hand pokes through my "I'll get better..." denial by reminding me how sick I must be to have qualified so quickly. But on the other hand is an insight into the process itself that three tries is considered fast. :(
I know when I ran into road blocks when applying for Food Stamps and other supplemental assistance I had to force myself *not* to look at the recently changed rules. I knew if I had concrete proof of how much the last president screwed people over by tightening eligibility - even if it didn't affect me personally - I'd probably never stop screaming.
